One Piece’s history

Eiichiro Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball when he was a child. He also took inspiration from other shōnen manga such as Saint Seiya, Fist of the North Star, and Samurai Shodown. The series’ storyline follows the adventures of a group of pirates as they search for the “One Piece” treasure.

In an early redrawn version of Romance Dawn, Luffy’s design was different: his face was oval-shaped and more serious, his hair was black and curly, he wore a sweatshirt with the letters “OP” on it, and he had no scar.

Oda’s editor wanted him to make Luffy a monkey because that was one of the animal symbols of Japan at that time; however, Oda stated that he wanted to draw a human protagonist. Oda later commented that he had not expected the series to last more than a couple of years.

Originally, Oda was planning for One Piece to last five years, and had already planned the ending. However, he found it would take too long to wrap everything up at that pace so he instead decided to run with it for ten years.

He also mentioned that when creating new characters, he thinks of what kind of role they will play in the story and how cool or funny they can be. The author also stated that he believes that “the underlying message of One Piece” is “believe in yourself”.

In an SBS question with a fan who asked him which character was his favorite, Eiichiro Oda answered that it was Luffy because of how he follows his dreams and never gives up.

One Piece’s plot

22 years ago, the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, was executed by the World Government. Before his death, he exclaimed that his treasure, known as the “One Piece“, would be up for the taking, but no one knows where it is hidden.

Luffy is a young boy who dreams of becoming King of the Pirates and acquiring the legendary treasure. He eats the Devil Fruit called the “Gomu Gomu no Mi” which gives him the ability to stretch like rubber. After accidentally eating it and losing his memory, he was taken in by Red-Haired Shanks, who taught him about being a pirate and gave him his straw hat.

Ten years later, Luffy sets out on a journey to find the One Piece and becomes a pirate, named the “Straw Hat Pirate Crew”. He is joined by Nami (the navigator and thief), Usopp (the sniper and liar), Sanji (the chef and womanizer), Zoro (the swordsman and pirate hunter), Chopper (the doctor and reindeer), Robin (the archaeologist and former assassin), Franky (the shipwright and cyborg), and Brook (the musician and skeleton).

During their journey, they face various villains, such as the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Marine Admirals, Emperor Big Mom, and Charlotte Katakuri. Luffy also meets other powerful pirates, including Captain Buggy the Clown, Captain Crocodile, Captain Hancock, Jinbei, Capone Bege, and X Drake. The crew also acquires allies, including the doctor Tony Tony Chopper, the archaeologist Nico Robin, the cyborg Franky, the musician Brook, and the samurai Roronoa Zoro.

One Piece’s style

At the time of its release, the dot-eyed style of artwork was unique in shōnen manga. Oda was influenced by Akira Toriyama’s work on Dragon Ball. He also took inspiration from other shōnen manga, such as Saint Seiya, Fist of the North Star, and Samurai Shodown.

One Piece has a distinctive art style that features exaggerated physical features such as large eyes, big mouths, and elongated limbs. The series also has a wide range of colors used throughout the panels and pages.

The characters in the series are often very expressive and emotive, shown through their body language and facial expressions.

Editors of One Piece

One Piece has had several editors throughout its serialization. Its current editor is Takanori Asada. The series was first edited by Kazuhiko Torishima, who was also Akira Toriyama’s editor for Dragon Ball.

When Oda started One Piece, he had two assistants helping him with the artwork; however, they soon left as they were not able to keep up with his pace. Oda then began working with an assistant named Takeshi Obata, who would go on to become the artist of Death Note.
