Sasuke is dumbstruck by Naruto’s display of power and asks Naruto what he is. Naruto tells Sasuke his dream is to become Hokage and asks what Sasuke’s dream is. When Sasuke says he has none, Naruto tells him that he does have one: to get revenge on Itachi. Naruto then states his wish to fight Sasuke again someday when they’re both at their strongest.
Sasuke, still unwilling to trust Naruto, attacks him with Chidori. However, Naruto manages to deflect the attack and knock Sasuke out with a powerful punch. As Naruto prepares to finish off Sasuke, Kakashi arrives and stopped him.
Kakashi tells Naruto that it’s not worth sacrificing his own life just to kill an enemy. He also reveals that Itachi didn’t massacre the Uchiha clan on his own; Madara was involved as well. Hearing this, Sasuke decides to spare Naruto’s life and leaves. Naruto is then seen crying over his failed attempt to save Gaara as Sakura comforts him.

In the anime, during the flashbacks of Itachi’s massacre of the Uchiha clan, a few things were changed:
- The scene where Itachi spared Sasuke‘s life is extended. In the manga, Sasuke only saw a glimpse of Itachi before he was knocked out, but in the anime, Sasuke saw everything that happened.
- Sasuke’s reaction to hearing that Madara was involved in the massacre is shown. In the manga, this wasn’t shown until much later.
